1. Secluded Spa Break: Moddershall Oaks, Staffordshire

A view of the jacuzzi and cabin style decor outside Moddershall Oak Spa Retreat

As a beauty editor, I've been to plenty of spas to review their facilities, and I can say with confidence that Moddershall Oaks is my favourite of all. It's miles from the nearest main road and feels super-secluded, with a gorgeous selection of outdoor areas to relax in, as well as quiet, peaceful indoor bathing areas.

I went in the depths of December, and the outdoor vitality pool was decorated in festive finery, with the oak beams dressed in fairy lights and pine wreaths, complete with a flickering outdoor fire, making it the most magical spot this side of Lapland.

There's a private outdoor hot tub too, which you book a time slot for, so there's none of that awkwardly waiting around for other people to get out, and the only sound for miles is birds merrily tweeting away as the sun sinks down.

Next to the outdoor pool is the sauna, again, one of the nicest I've ever been in. For starters it's huge, so you don't feel crushed in with other users, plus two of the walls are floor-to-ceiling windows, so you don't get the claustrophobic feeling that sometimes happens with saunas.

Indoors it's just as delightful, with the cosiest post-treatment sleep lounge for unwinding in post massage, facial or manicure. It's low lit and quiet, with no devices allowed, plus there's a mesmerising fire pit in the middle to watch as you doze off.

There are only ten suites at the spa, so it never feels crowded, plus if you or your partner need a break from resting, there are bikes you can borrow and a state of the art gym for working up a sweat before you indulge in a little more chilling.

The Best Couples Spa Package: The Autumnal Bliss Spa Break, from £375 for two

Available in October and November, this romantic spa break includes a welcome mocktail, an invigorating winter pear and nigella body buff and massage, a two-course dinner, one night in Moddershall's ultra-cosy, luxury suites plus a delicious breakfast the next day.

Fancy waiting until December? Treat yourself to the Festive Sparkle package, from £440, which includes Prosecco, a bespoke 50-minute face and body treatment incorporating sparkling gold honey for an indulgent glow, plus dinner, breakfast and an overnight stay.

2. Adventurous Spa Break: Armathwaite Hall, Lake District

A nighttime view of the couples spa hotel Armathwaite's pool and indoor spa facilities from the outside

Set within the Lake District's signature breath-taking scenery, Armathwaite Hall is the perfect spot for a romantic spa break if you like your relaxation with a side of outdoors adventure - couples rate it a 9.4 out of 10 on booking.com for a two-person break, so don’t just take my word for it!

When I went, I treated myself to the forest bathing experience, which saw an expert teach myself and my partner about the joys of reconnecting with nature, through a two-hour forest walk, taking in the imposing trees surrounding the spa. It helped us to chill out during a particularly stressful time and we left with a new appreciation for trees – I never thought an oak would make me feel so calm.

The walk is leisurely, with plenty of time to stop and reflect, but it still made me feel like I'd earned my afternoon session by the indoor infinity pool.

They also offer a cold-water swimming experience in the incredible lake next to the spa, which I wasn't brave enough for, but I know it would have felt incredible to dip in the lake before plunging into the gloriously warm indoor pool.

The Best Couples Spa Package: The Sunset Spa Package, from £60

Watch the dramatic colours of a harvest moon sunset dip below the fells of the Lake District with the Sunset Spa package from Armathwaite Hall. From 5:30pm, guests can enjoy a cold glass of prosecco, use of luxury robes and slippers and access to the countryside spa within a gorgeous rural setting, offering a relaxed, high comfort, luxurious spa facility.

Want an added touch of outdoor autumn wellness? Soak in the colours of nature with the Woodland Nature Connection which includes forest bathing and mindfulness wellness therapy.

3. Ibiza-Style Spa Break: Carden Park, Cheshire

A couple walking accross the manicured spa gardens at Carden Park in Cheshire at sunset

The Spa at Carden Parl has outdoor jacuzzis dotted as far as the eye can see, glass pods on the lawn to drink Champagne in and fire pits crackling away under awnings. Chilled Ibiza-style music plays discreetly through outdoor speakers, giving the whole place a relaxed, Balearic beach-club vibe - perfect if you're planning a wedding in ibiza.

As well as the plethora of outdoor jacuzzis to hop between, there's also a large heated outdoor infinity pool with massage jets and an outdoor sauna with floor to ceiling glass windows that allow you to gaze out at the countryside whatever the weather. For an ultra-luxe touch, there's a Champagne bar so you can keep your glass topped up without venturing inside.

If you do manage to tear yourself away from the incredible outdoor offering, inside there's a chic infinity pool, heated marble bed, and more luxury saunas, all offering different benefits, including a bio sauna, a salt steam room and a wood-fired sauna.

An ultra-unique feature here is the sensory room, which ASMR fans will adore, plus there's a relaxation room, with star lights twinkling on the ceilings, as well as a panoramic relaxation area with floor-to-ceiling glass walls so you can enjoy the views a little more.

The Best Couples Spa Package: The Gourmet Spa Stay package, from £355

Carden Park believes that no romantic spa break is complete without good food and wine (no arguments there, then!) so they dreamt up this package, which combines access to the award-winning spa as well as first-class fine dining in the hotel’s newest restaurant, The Vines.

The brains behind the restaurant was previously chef to the royal family, so you know you're in good hands. Aside from the food, the package includes a half-day spa experience.

4. Spa Break for Reconnecting: South Lodge Spa, West Sussex

A view of the heated pool and green surroundings at South Lodge Spa

If wedding planning arguments are causing tension between you and your partner, South Lodge Spa is the best place to decamp to, to destress and reconnect. Set in the tranquil South Downs, this spa really is something else. It has a breath-taking indoor infinity pool that looks out over the grounds, while the sauna also boasts floor to ceiling windows.

There are two decadent steam rooms to luxuriate in, and an outdoor vitality hydrotherapy pool which is so delightful you'll happily stay in for hours, floating between the back massagers and waterfall jets.

There's also an outdoor wild swimming pool, if cold water swimming is your thing. As for the rooms you'll be staying in, they're inside the opulent mansion house and have standalone bath bathtubs (in case you haven't spent enough time in water!), and a pillow menu to choose the perfect place to rest your head. If that's not luxury, I don't know what is.

The Best Couples Spa Package: Muddy Spa Break, from £539

On top of an overnight stay in South Lodge's luxury accommodation, you'll also be treated to brunch (in bed, if you like), dinner in the restaurant and a 60-minute self-guided mud experience, which is a super sensual treatment inspired by ancient Arabic traditions.

The cocooning ritual takes place in your own private steam room cabin, and sees you apply a detoxifying mud to yourself and your partner, to invigorate and refresh your skin.

Banish the Sunday scaries at the picture-perfect Cotswolds Spa at Whatley Manor. Imagine sandy coloured Cotswold stone, bubbling outdoor spa pools and secluded corners to cuddle up in, and you’ll be along the right lines.

The cosy space looks out over the country house’s rolling grounds and boasts a thermal suite, a hydrotherapy pool, luxurious heated stone recliners and salt scrub showers, all designed to help melt away stress and ease wedding anxiety.

Trip Advisor reviewers call the spa “total perfection” and “bliss,” and we can see why - the spot is set amongst the most dreamy surroundings that couldn’t feel further away from the stress of wedding planning mistakes and worries.

6. Couples Spa Break in the City: AIRE Ancient Baths, London

A view of the vaulted ceiling and candle-lit pool at AIRE Ancient Baths in London

Stepping inside the tranquil oasis that is AIRE Ancient Baths, you’d never believe you’re in the heart of London's Covent Garden! As you enter, all you'll be able to hear is a delicate whisper of relaxing melodies, worlds away from the noise of the street performers outside.

The space is all vaulted ceilings and exposed brick, with low, atmospheric lighting soothing your nervous system from the minute you step inside. There are never more than eight people in the spa, so it feels private and exclusive, and the staff pay amazing attention to detail, finding you when it’s time for your treatment, rather than you needing to wait in a lounge.

An extra special touch we appreciated is that when you head in for your treatment, the staff dry and warm your swimwear - an added luxury which beats putting a wet swimsuit back on. They also pre-warm your slippers post-treatment, which is certainly something we could get used to.

This heavenly spot doesn’t offer spa breaks, but what it lacks in overnight options it more than makes up for in romantic offerings, with a whole menu of couple experiences.

The Best Couples Spa Package: The Love Connection, from £480

Designed to bring couples closer together than ever before, the Love Connection Package includes a 45 minute full body massage using rich sandalwood oil, known for its deeply relaxing properties. Your therapist uses amethyst crystals in the treatment, known to release tension and bring a sense of closeness.

Post massage, you’re invited to indulge in the Ancient Thermal Bath tour through the different temperatures baths. Take a dip in the jet bath to feel the invigorating bubbles and visit the Vaporium, a steam room infused with aromatherapy oil. The Flotarium, a dreamy salt water bath has to be experienced too.

Lastly, move on to the relaxation area, where you can recline on the warm marble stone, refresh yourself and enjoy cava and truffles or fresh fruit juice

7. For Incredible Sea Views: Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall

A man and woman in the indoor pool at a couples spa break in Cornwall enjoying unspoilt views of the ocean outside

Cornwall’s much-loved eco-hotel The Scarlet is a haven of luxury and tranquility, with a rugged edge that you only get in rural Cornwall.

Look out to sea from the cliff top swimming pool and hot tubs, complete with sweeping views over the breathtaking Mawgan Porth Beach and the wild Atlantic beyond. While sunny weather is lovely for outdoor hot tub times, we’d be inclined to say that when the winds and rain blow in, it’s even more special.

We’re particularly taken by the reed pool, a natural place to take a dip, which eschews chlorine in favour of being cleansed by a living reed bed. There are also huge copper bathtubs to relax in, though calling them baths does them a disservice, they’re so much grander than that - think giant bronze bowls and you’ll be along the right lines.

After a bracing walk on the beach, we can think of nothing better than holing up in The Scarlet’s treatment tents, lit only by lanterns, for a massage. Post-treatment, the suspended cocoon pods are perfect for a snooze.

The Best Couples Spa Package: Two Night Spend Time Together, from £680

Treat yourself to two nights at The Scarlet to really switch off from the world. You’ll stay in a sea-view room and indulge in a three course dinner one night, plus a two-course breakfast both mornings.

You can pick from two spa treatments: either the iconic Cliff Top Hot Tub session, or a calming seaweed Copper Tub session (which reviewers say is extremely romantic) and either a Rhassoul with seasonal scrub or awakening Hammam with coffee scrub.

Use of the spa is included, as is access to the daily yoga and wellness classes. You’ll leave feel refreshed, relaxed and ready to take on the world.
