Utter peace and quiet reign behind the golden Cotswold walls of this former merchant’s house in Chipping Campden’s perfectly preserved historic high street. Buildings have stood on this site since Medieval times, but once through the front door, you’ll note this fine hotel is 100% on mod-cons.
Room for romance
The village of Chipping Campden is like something from a BBC costume drama. Rooms at The Cotswold House Hotel, however, are far from a period piece. Contemporary comforts include flat screen TV, baths made for two and stunning high-tech lighting systems throughout this ancient building. Stylish and well-appointed bedrooms mean everything’s at your fingertips the minute you close the door.
Time to dine
A favourite with hotel residents and locals alike (always a good sign!), Juliana’s Restaurant at Cotswold House is a melt-in-the-mouth feast. We loved the crab gazpacho, roast brill with shellfish cannelloni, and rabbit shepherds pie. This is a seriously competent chef – and the cheeseboard was to die for! (£39.50 for 2 courses; £49.50 for 3 courses)
Best of the rest
Chill out in the exquisite gardens with a backdrop of the magnificent Cotswolds countryside. Then stroll down to the renovated coach house to luxuriate in a treatment at Temple Spa, or take a dip in the indoor pool. Feeling energetic or fancy a romantic stroll? A path behind Cotswold House takes you straight up to ancient Dover’s Hill and the Cotswold Way with stunning views over the Vale of Evesham.
Don’t leave without…
…lounging back with a cocktail (special mention must go to the lipsmacking strawberry daiquiri) in the hotel’s Juliana’s Bar – grab a window seat to spy on activity in Chipping Campden’s chocolate-box high street. And do use the first floor loos – first time I’ve ever watched Friends on mini flat-screen TV while sitting on the toilet!
Perfect for a first night, mini-moon or romantic short break, and a wonderful venue for a wedding (hire all 28 bedrooms, restaurant and bar for £11k).
