Just the two of us Nestled in 18 acres of its own woodland and with an unspoilt northerly Lakeland outlook, 18th century Overwater Hall feels fantastically far from the tourist hubbub of this wild and beautiful district. Perfect for a first night getaway, then.
There’s something wonderfully charming about Overwater at Christmas time (we visited in December) when the roaring log fires and Christmas trees decking the grand hall and central staircase add to the cheery festive feel of the house. Kick back and enjoy the relaxed grandeur of the formal rooms as well as the welcoming service offered by hosts Stephen, Angela and Adrian, which all feels a bit like being spoilt at a Victorian country house weekend.
Room for romance Bed down like lord and lady of the manor (or prince and princess!) by taking a turret bedroom – there are eleven rooms in total. Ours had everything you’d expect from a weekend retreat – a hard-to-leave bed and relax-inducing roll-top tub in the en suite bathroom. Breathtaking views of nearby Skiddaw Mountain and the Uldale Fells, as well as sightings of rare red squirrels – for nature lovers – each morning when you throw open the curtains are just some of the little pleasures to look forward to.
Wine & dine At mealtime, head chef and host Adrian is the real star of the show. His four-course dinners are a real gastronomic affair which draw local foodies as well as hotel guests. For a mere £45, you can feast on the likes of king scallop on black pudding with a roast pork belly, followed by a succulent saddle of venison pan-fried with juniper on a pancetta rosti with a flavoursome rabbit pie. There’s also a changing dessert menu to lust after, followed by coffee and homemade petit fours – to be enjoyed beside the crackling log fire in the drawing room. And for a nightcap, there’s a mini decanter of Adrian’s homemade fruit liquor for a tipple in your room before bedtime.
We love The stay-in-your-room-temptation of the roll-top tub for two, as well as the get-out-and-explore lakes of the great romantic outdoors.
