Location In the heart of the city, Baglioni Hotel Luna is within easy reach of the main sights, but still feels like a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. The interiors at this former palazzo are exquisite, with gorgeous frescos and chandeliers throughout. Our room was spacious and elegant, featuring silk wall linings and a sumptuous Italian marble bathroom. It’s one of the most romantic hotels we’ve experienced!
What to see Where to begin? From the majestic Grand Canal to the Piazza San Marco, Venice is a treasure trove of both iconic and lesser-known sights. For us, a walking tour proved essential to catch them all. For something particularly special, try the hotel’s unique evening tour by candlelight, based on the codega. In the Middle Ages, such men walked in front of Venetian noblemen at night to provide light and to ward off thieves and trouble. Our superb guide told us plenty of fascinating stories.
What to do A night at the opera should be on your to-do list – we felt incredibly glamorous in such an ornate space alongside impeccably dressed locals. If an evening performance is sold out, a daytime opera tour is still a Venice experience. It may be a cliché of this canal city, but we savoured every moment of our gondola ride, floating past the most beautiful buildings. For an affordable option, hop on a vaporetto waterbus or take a water taxi. The nearby islands of Murano and Burano are both charming and definitely worth a mini-excursion.
What to eatBaccalà, or salt-cured cod, is the basis of a variety of heavenly dishes here. We especially enjoyed a creamed version with a black crust served with crispy prawns at Ristorante da Mario alla Fava. We also loved the classic-with-a-twist delights at Baglioni Hotel Luna’s Canova restaurant, a refined spot for a romantic dinner. Breakfast was served in the hotel’s grand ballroom, and was a sumptuous affair. On the island of Burano, the canalside eatery Riva Rosa is a must-try for delicious seafood. Wash it all down with that most Venetian of drinks, the spritz, whether Aperol or Campari.
