Plush, plush, plush!
First impressions: You really do feel like a rock star when you arrive at The Chester Residence, a set of serviced designer apartments housed in four Georgian townhouses in Edinburgh’s swanky West End Village. Walking into the thickly-carpeted reception is like strolling into an exclusive private members club with a personal invite: and the feeling doesn’t stop there. As helpful porter Stuart, decked out in full kilt and sporran, carried our suitcases to our apartment, he brings us a glass of champagne – the perfect welcome – before opening the door to our Grand Apartment. And that’s when our jaws drop.
Room for romance: The apartments can’t really be called rooms or suites – they’re much more impressive than that. Wide carpeted corridors lead to a stylish bedroom with huge bed, crisp white linen and a wall-mounted plasma TV: a slick modern kitchen with a Nespresso machine and touch-activated oven (if you plan on doing any cooking, that is); an enormous bathroom with monsoon shower and bath, and generous piles of Jo Malone toiletries; and the biggest lounge we’ve ever seen. In here, you’ll find high ceilings, stylish furnishings, leather sofas, a dining table and another plasma, complete with Sky+. All this for you and your new hubby? Luxury indeed.
Time to dine: In keeping with the ‘serviced apartment with a difference’ ethos at the Chester Residence, there is no restaurant, but there is a healthy, seasonal in-room menu to make your mouths water. Supplied by local company Naked and finished in-house, it includes treats like smoked mackerel pate (delish), ‘Killer’ king prawns, Jamaican Stew Pork (melt-in-the-mouth) and even Aberdeen Angus steak, which amazingly arrives cooked just perfectly. Then there’s the breakfasts: stunning continental style (think parma ham, croissants, mozzerella) with orange juice and smoothies, all served on a huge slate to your door, so you can have breakfast in bed, A-list style.
Tipple for two
Best of the rest: The Mews apartments (pictured) have two bedrooms and cute gardens, and are perfect for getting ready on the morning of your wedding. Despite the plush atmosphere, the hotel even welcomes little ones and includes the full set of Harry Potter books in each apartment to keep them busy while you luxuriate! It’s also a tradition at the Chester Residence to serve drinks and canapés in the honesty bar between 6-9pm each night – completely compulsory, but we suggest you attend. Manager Rory and his staff treat you like film stars, and are generous with both the Talisker whisky and the local information. Ask them anything you want to know about a night out in Edinburgh, chat to other guests, or just enjoy the yummy sushi.
Big night in
Don’t leave without: trying each and every one of the in-room extras. Choose from the extensive library of DVDs and cuddle up on the sofa together with a bottle of wine, or get cultural with Ian Rankin’s entire back catalogue. Reception can arrange a therapist for in-room treatments or, if you want to go out on the town, can book chauffer services, theatre tickets, golf or horse-riding, guided tours, babysitting and even a personal shopper so you can flex the plastic at Harvey Nichols. But once you see the apartment you may not want to go out: just soak in a bubble bath, cuddle up in matching robes and collapse into your super-soft, Jo Malone-scented bed. Bliss.
