Just nine miles from Balmoral Castle, in the Cairngorms National Park, you'll find this stunning 19th-century hunting lodge. The styling is wonderfully eclectic and inventive, with over 16,000 antiques and artworks by artists as diverse as Picasso and, well, Prince Charles! Start each evening with a whisky in The Flying Stag bar for a cosily romantic experience.

Croft 103 is made up of two beautiful cottages, which come with eco credentials - they're powered largely by a small wind turbine and are carbon negative. Each has a seven-foot - seven! - feather-topped bed, fully equipped kitchens and incredible views. Hill Cottage slightly edges it by having two baths, each made for two people, including an outdoor bath overlooking the sea.

13. Killiehuntly, Highlands

If you love both chic design and the great outdoors, you'll be in heaven at Killiehuntly. Just outside the city you'll find this bewitching 17th-century castle that's been beautifully restored as a chic hotel. There are just nine bedrooms, plus the self-contained Gate Lodge, which makes for a serene atmosphere.
