The Halkin Hotel, London

Travel editor Amanda Statham checks out The Halkin Hotel in London's Belgravia

The Halkin : a hidden gem

Where: Belgravia, London. 020 7333 1000, www.halkin.como.bz

First impressions: Tucked away in a leafy street in the heart of Belgravia close to Hyde Park, this boutique hideaway is a hidden gem. It’s very discreet, with the appearance of a (large) townhouse and only a flag outside giving away its hotel identity. Inside, there’s a snug bar to the left and small reception with arched windows and marble floor to the right. The staff are smiley and helpful – just what you need after a hectic wedding or long journey.

Deluxe bedroom

Room for romance: There are 42 rooms ranging from King Double to Como Suite, I checked in to a mid-range deluxe room, which comes with immaculate cream sofa and chair, desk, massive bed with squishy cream duvet and soft, giant headboard plus a marble bathroom with curved corner tub. It’s all slicker and more contemporary than you’d expect from the traditional exterior. Boys will fall for the touch sensitive heating and lighting control pad; girls will love the Como Shambhala toiletries and cream furnishings and you’ll both enjoy the tub and walk-in shower.

Lobby bar at The Halkin

Restaurant or room service? Nahm, the hotel’s one-Michelin star Thai restaurant is very classy. However, if you’re shattered or just want to cosy up in your room together, the room service menu is excellent. A mouth-watering 100 per cent beef Halkin burger arrived on a silver platter with layer of delicious cheese and perfect fries. It was one of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted and so it should be at £18 a pop.

Bedroom bliss

Best of the rest? This is a small hotel, so there isn’t a pool or spa. The Halkin Bar is intimate and has a good line in cocktails and light bites, like a triple sandwich, steak salad or afternoon tea. There’s a dinky gym with trainers and yoga teachers on request and guests also have access to the Urban Escape spa at the hotel’s sister property Metropolitan London close by.

Don’t leave without…ordering a glass (or bottle!) of Champagne and sipping it in the corner bathtub. Bliss.
