UK mini-moon: Lympstone Manor, Devon

Lympstone Manor is a country house hotel with Michael Caines MBE at the helm. Features Editor Hannah Davies checked in to try out the Michelin-starred food, plus the famously beautiful bedrooms and views - could this Exmouth hotel live up to the hype?

WHERE This beautifully restored South Devon country house has incredible views across the Exe estuary, which are magical at sunset. Before my stay, I’d seen on Instagram how stunning the surroundings were, but nothing quite compared to being there myself, a gin and tonic in hand, watching the sky cycle through pink and gold towards twilight. It’s a lovely part of the world, with lots of romantic walks on the doorstep.

WHY Michelin-starred food overseen by chef Michael Caines MBE is an undoubted draw. We tucked into the Estuary tasting menu, enjoying seven heavenly courses of modern British cuisine.

Breakfast was also a special experience – the scrambled eggs are a gourmet experience in themselves!

The chic bar at Lympstone Manor

Our spacious room was gorgeous. From the sumptuously comfortable bed to the freestanding bath positioned for wonderful views of the countryside (and not forgetting a complimentary gin tray), everything was beautifully indulgent.

Another highlight had to be the immaculate service we received here – nothing was too much trouble for the attentive and efficient staff.

WHEN: We went in chilly February, and Lympstone Manor was a wonderfully cosy spot for a winter escape. After a walk around the frost-dappled grounds, it was lovely to cuddle up in front of the roaring open fire in the bar, and to soak in a hot bath while admiring the views. I can imagine that it’s an equally lovely experience when the weather warms up, with such glorious surroundings that are just made for al fresco relaxation. And you should make time to explore Devon’s majestic Jurassic Coast, retreating back here for an indulgent dinner after a long day’s hiking.
