As the nights draw in and the days get colder in the UK, it’s tempting to travel further afield in October, in search of honeymoon heaven, but there are a whole host of short-haul and long-haul destinations to choose from. Deciding on which will be paradise for you isn’t easy and it’s important to have a good think about what your priorities are when booking your trip of a lifetime.
For a long-haul honeymoon escape, October is a great time to head to Fiji, where the weather is warm and there are less crowds. Enjoy the kaleidoscopic coral reefs and laid-back beach living or, for an equally exotic honeymoon, Mauritius is highly recommended, as it gets lots of sun this time of year, which comes after the cooler winter, making it perfect for warming your post-wedding muscles on plush sunbeds.
October marks the end of summer in Japan and the US, but it’s still as good a time to head there as any for your honeymoon, with autumnal leaves and plenty of opportunity to explore the incredible cities of Tokyo and New York.
As for Oman, the winter starts in October so the temperature drops to become more pleasant and refreshing. While Chile welcomes spring in all its fresh-flower and mild temperature glory.
But long-haul is not always the answer to get good weather; there are some gems closer to home, depending on what you’re looking for. At this time of year there’s still short-haul sand and sun to be had, especially on the Greek Islands – and at budget-friendly prices, too.
So here are some locations that not only have fantastic weather in October, but also have a plethora of activities to ensure your honeymoon meets – and beats – both your expectations.
Expect some of Africa’s best beaches, fresh-out-of-the-water seafood and long, sun-soaked days on a Mauritian holiday. The island has a classic tropical climate with warm weather year-round and with exquisite beaches that outshine the A-listers who regularly visit them, there’s no better place to get some vitamin sea. For a relatively small-scale tropical island, Mauritius packs a serious punch. Travellers first come here for the picture-postcard coastline, but you’ll soon discover what draws visitors back is the undersea marvels and island explorations such as catamaran tours and hikes to gently flowing waterfalls.
A relative newcomer on the honeymoon circuit, but Oman is a truly romantic destination. Not only does it have crystal turquoise waters and golden sands, but beyond the beaches there are deserts to explore and mind-blowing forts, castles and mosques to be seen. Wherever you go, there are amazing hotels too, built within forests, in deserts, even on top of mountains. The weather is at its most pleasant from October, when temperatures are warm but cooler than the sweltering summer months. October is also the perfect month to see turtles at Ras al Jinz.
As soon as you land, set your watch to ‘Fiji time’ as exploring the archipelago’s pristine beaches and captivating culture shouldn’t be rushed. October is a great time to visit, when the cost of getting and staying here hasn’t yet reached its peak. Plus, during this period, the weather is dry, settled and warm and the beaches and resorts are far less crowded. Don’t leave without snorkelling the clear lagoons to see the world’s most colourful coral reefs and, of course, strolling hand-in-hand along its palm-lined beaches.
Chile is nature on an immense scale, where sky-scraping peaks meet rushing rivers, so there’s plenty of adventure to be had. This time of year (which is spring in this part of the world) welcomes colourful blooms and experiences mild temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a good time of year to experience a great escape and kayak among icebergs or hike Patagonia. It’s also the best place in the world for astro-tourism (thanks to little humidity and low light pollution) so you can sit side by side and relax under a canopy of stars.
Japan is truly timeless, a place where ancient traditions are fused with modern life. In October there is little rainfall, skies are clear, and temperatures are mild, not to mention the vivid hues of autumn leaves are visually stunning. Set off to see the electrifying sights of buzzing Tokyo and Osaka, the traditional temples of Kyoto, then head south to Okinawa where you can enjoy the 27ºC temperatures on its castaway-like beaches.
There’s nowhere more enchanting than the east coast of North America in autumn, with the world’s best sightseeing, film-set-like scenes and tree-filled landscapes to explore. Visit Boston, Vermont or New York, depending on your honeymoon agenda, where the temperatures are pleasant, and mélanges of intense autumn leaves will grace your every view. Or, embrace the road trip culture and hit all three.
Time slows almost to a standstill on Crete, Greece’s largest island. Sunshine is pretty much guaranteed year-round, but autumn is especially lovely for rambling and exploring the ancient ruins, snow-capped peaks and vanilla-sand beaches. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is glorious (go early to beat the crowds), and the 16km-long Samariá Gorge along with 50 more canyons are amazing to explore.
