Seclusion in the sun
“The weeks and months building up to the wedding had been absolutely jam packed, juggling not just the biggest day of our lives, but a house move that had gone sour; a particularly busy run at work, and visiting families split between North Wales and Northern France.
“The honeymoon had to be extra special, and like many couples we spent hours searching the internet gazing at dream locations. The Maldives seemed to offer all wanted. Finally deciding that we should get some expert advice we turned to LuxuryHolidaysDirect.com, who recommended Kurumba.
“The reassurance of the longest established resort in the Maldives, small enough to feel personal, and with an unparalleled reputation of the luxury for which we longed – I remembered seeing pictures of Denise Van Outen and David Walliams staying there.”
Whie sands and crystal waters
“We were married in Bradford on Avon on 24th May, and we were blessed with the only sunny day of the weekend. We extended our stay in Bradford until the Monday, and were enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful Wiltshire town, but longed for the sunshine.
“The flight to the Maldives is nine hours, a comfortable direct flight with Sri Lankan Airlines. We were so excited to arrive neither of us having been to the Indian Ocean before, and were met at the airport by the first of many friendly faces from the concierge team.
“An air conditioned speedboat sped us off on the 15 minute journey to Kurumba, our heads full of pictures of crystal waters and white sands… and we weren’t disappointed. The explorer who first discovered the island of Kurumba described it as ‘breathtaking’ – a sentiment that would be echoed many, many times.”
A warm welcome guaranteed
“A welcoming party on a lanterned wooden jetty presented us with garlands and smiles, and already we felt at ease – the hectic times were already falling from our shoulders.
“We were shown to the beachfront bungalow that was to be our home for the next 10 days, and were simply blown away by the care that had gone in to preparing the rooms, with exquisite tropical flower arrangements spelling out a warm honeymoon welcome, chilled champagne in the fridge, and even a warm bubble bath laced with fresh petals.”
Incredible comfort and lxury
“The bungalow could not have been more luxurious, from the mahogany floors to the outdoor shower in our own private garden. The four poster bed was the most comfortable we’d ever slept in.”
Workout or chillout
“Many warned of potential boredom on any archetypal honeymoon island, but here there was plenty to do all within a leisurely stroll. If lifting cocktails is not your idea of exercise there is a state of the art gym; private yoga classes and a full range of water sports to keep mind and body active.
‘There are also a myriad of amazing day trips specifically tailored for honeymooners; our favourite was dinner served by our very own butler on a nearby deserted island.”
Blissful couples’ spa treatments
“Kate already had her eye on the stunning spa facilities, run by Aquum spa. Together with the manager George, we devised a wellness programme – a tailor-made series of treatments to buff, massage and exfoliate us back to life.
“Our first experience was the signature ritual of the Rendezvous treatment which is intended for couples arriving at Kurumba, and includes a foaming body polish; symmetry massage; foot massage, and a mind tonic – a full hour and a half of sheer bliss.”
Delicious dining and intimacy
“The range and quality of cuisine at Kurumba took us pleasantly by surprise. We had booked the ‘dine around’ package that allowed us to indulge in one of our shared passions – great food. There were nine restaurants, including French, Italian, Japanese, Indian, Lebanese, Chinese and an exquisite Oceanside bar and grill. The Italian became a firm favourite – the sautéed prawn linguine was the best we’d ever tasted.
“We soon drifted into an easy routine where lightweight novels sat top of our list, long lazy lunches, afternoon naps in the beautiful sunshine, before dressing for dinner. We felt closer to each other than ever before as we shared delicious cocktails in the moonlight, sitting on the open decking by the bar, perched over the shallow waters of the surf and spotting baby reef sharks cruising around the shallows.
‘Bar manager Hilary greeted us with a wide smile and explained that there was a live music most evenings, and that only Maldivian bands entertained guests with music that ranged from phenomenal James Blunt and Keane covers through to a stunning climax of traditional Maldivian song and dance.”
Swimming with sea turtles
“I had heard the Maldives was renowned for great scuba diving, but had only ever arranged resort dives when on holiday. Kurumba had a PADI centre led by Sindi, and knew this was my opportunity to get my Open Water certification.
“My tuition was one-on-one, and classroom tuition was interspersed by regular dives to the stunning local reefs. I’d never seen so much sea life before, and was thrilled to swim with huge sea turtles and amongst shoals of tropical fish.”
Celebrating our union
“Quality time with each other had never been so good. We’d open a bottle of prosecco on our veranda and watch the sun dip slowly beneath the horizon with our feet up, making plans for our future together and celebrating the final completion of the new flat to which we would return.”
A dream honeymoon resort
“We both toasted our little slice of the magical Maldives, Kurumba epitomises all that a dream honeymoon should be and was the most perfect celebration of our marriage and the start of our life together.”
