Escape to the sun
Tom & Lucy Forsyth honeymooned in Sicily
We decided on Sicily as neither of us had been and we both love Italy. Because we got married in July, we felt that there was no need to jump on a 10 hour flight to catch some sun when a short hop to Europe would guarantee gorgeous sunshine! We also didn’t want to fly long haul as we knew we would be exhausted after all the celebrations. We also both love Italian food – lots of fresh fish, pasta and Sicilian wine!
Our first impression was that we couldn’t believe that we were in Taormina by lunch time the day after the wedding. The town itself was very pretty and while we were there, Etna was erupting so a there was an amazing red glow on the mountainside that was very dramatic.
We stayed in three different hotels in three very diverse places. We started off at Taormina in a beautiful old monastery hotel called the San Domenico Palace. It was lovely being in a pretty town and able to pop out to local bars and shops.
Our next hotel was on the Aeolian Islands, which were a short boat ride off the mainland. We stayed on Panarea Island at Raya Hotel, a very chic contemporary white washed hotel.
We then moved on to Salina Island to stay at the Capofaro Resort, which is set in a gorgeous vineyard with delicious food and excellent service. It was lovely to be in the middle of the vineyard where all the wine and olive oil were locally produced.
An island boat trip
In Taormina we explored the local town and visited the Roman amphitheatre.
On Panarea Island we hired a boat round the island and the hotel gave us a delicious picnic lunch to take with us.
There were gorgeous coves where we could jump in and swim and the water was so warm and clear.
Exploring on two wheels
On Salina island we hired a scooter and had some hairy rides round the sharp bends, exploring the island.
Wine tasting and oysters
Hotel Raya was a huge highlight – especially the bar which had panoramic views of the sea and some of the most delicious nibbles to have with drinks including 6 oysters before dinner! The wine tasting at Capofaro was also a huge treat
