Not long to go before your Big day but still haven’t hit those getting-in-shape goals? Bring in your maids or your mum and check into bridal bootcamp! Sophie Hunt tried out Refocus Fitness’ five-day version and reported back…


Location, Location, Location


You’ll find Refocus Fitness’ Bridal Camp at the gorgeous Oldwalls Leisure resort, Gower. Just 30 mins out of Swansea town centre, it’s close to some of the most breathtaking beaches in Wales – and yes, you’ll get to check them out during your stay!

The Bridal Bootcamp Package


All Refocus Fitness’ packages include: top-notch accommodation (think en-suite bathrooms all round); a friendly team of personal trainers; a variety of fitness and endurance classes all planned around your personal fitness levels; and a sports-massage therapist on-site, who was a big help after a heavy day’s workout – she found muscles I never knew I had! As well as a great five days of fitness (or three days, if you’d rather), the Bridal Camp also includes help with your wedding planning from a whole team of experts – so there’s no need to fall behind while you get away.

What to Expect


Forget scary army-types barking orders: we started with a fitness assessment (which lowered the fear-factor from the start), then we were allowed to choose how much or little we could cope with. We were never forced into anything – only nicely encouraged along. My personal aim was to tone up rather than lose weight and the camp really helped – I got such a sense of achievement after working out, I joined a gym as soon as I got back!

The Fitness Itinerary


There was a great choice of activities – from aerobics and boxercise to kettlebells and Pilates – and we crammed in as much as we could. We kept up surprisingly well in gym class, and even headed out to the beach – cold, but worth it as it was one of the best beaches I’ve been to!

Top Workshops


Especially for brides-to-be, there were workshops on nutrition, Big-day meal tips, wedding dress ideas (including a mini show from local superstar Stephanie Allin, which was so much fun and really unexpected!), wedding planning workshops, and a great four-week fitness and diet plan so you can keep up the good work after you get home.

The Food


Very important! Every meal was locally sourced, delicious, and homemade (by renowned Welsh chef Sam Mullen, who also provides catering for the weddings at Oldwalls), and we were even given the recipes for all the meals in our exit pack. Look out for the oat pancakes – definitely my favourite.

The Verdict


Not only did we get to work hard on toning up and looking great (or dropping that last dress size in some cases), we also got to take advantage of Oldwalls’ wedding expertise for those all-important big-day details. What more could we want from a bridal bootcamp?
