Watch our wedding cake how-to: assembly and decoration

The sponge is done, the icing is dry - let GC Couture show you how to assemble and decorate your cake for W-day

Here at Y&YW HQ, we LOVE a good spot of wedding DIY. Whether brides are getting green-fingered and doing their own flower arranging or organising a bunting making session with their ‘maids, we always love to hear about homemade, personal touches.

In our eyes, one of the ultimate homemade heroes is the DIY wedding cake. We’re not sure if it’s because we’re Bake Off obsessed or because we just love cake, but there’s something truly special about a home-baked wedding cake.

We think it’s also a lovely bonding project to take on with a loved one in the build-up to your special day. Perhaps your mum or grandmother taught you to bake as a child and creating your wedding cake would be the perfect pre-wedding task to take on together? Or maybe you and your spouse-to-be would love to begin married life as a brilliant baking team and have the opportunity to show off your work in front of all of your guests!

Whoever you bake with (and even if you bake alone!) you’ll feel so proud to produce your own reception centrepiece that is quite unlike any other. You can also have your bake immortalised on your wedding photography!

If you’re feeling a little daunted by the idea of donning your apron, then don’t fear! We have teamed up with cake making experts, GC Couture, to show you how to build and decorate your cake. If you’ve come straight in on this stage, we recommend heading over to our Dirty Icing How To to ace the first steps.

Once you have your tiers baked and iced, you’re ready to take on the fun bit; building and decorating! No matter how you’re styling your day, you’ll be able to use the skills you learn in this video to adorn a cake to suit your taste. Now, on your marks, get set, bake!
