Cringing at the thought of your first dance? You might want to cower at the idea of slow-dancing, or perhaps anything too soppy sends you running for the hills, but you can still do something that seems special and sentimental to you without too much, er, cheese.
Our pick of the best unusual first dance songs will have you looking forward to doing something different, rather than dreading your first spin around the floor as man and wife – so read on to get inspired…
1. Aqualung – Brighter Than Sunshine
The lyrics to this sweet song are romantic and touching, but in a feel-good, carefree way – rather than anything too heavy.
Our favourite lyrics: “I’m yours and suddenly you’re mine/Suddenly you’re mine/And it’s brighter than sunshine”
2. Jack Johnson – Do You Remember
His soulful hit ‘Better Together’ is a popular first dance choice, but this lesser known track from Jack Johnson’s ‘In Between Dreams’ album is perfect for nostalgic couples – it’s not too slow, either!
Our favourite lyrics: “Over ten years have gone by/And you’re still mine/We’re locked in time”
3. Arctic Monkeys – Baby I’m Yours
The anarchic rock band showed their sentimental side with this version of Barbara Lewis’ original classic – it has a lovely retro feel.
Our favourite lyrics: “And I’ll be yours until two and two is three/Yours, until the mountains crumble to the sea/In other words, until eternity”
4. Adam Sandler – I Wanna Grow Old With You
Adam Sandler’s adorable self-penned tune from his film ‘The Wedding Singer’ is really moving without being too corny – you could even change the lyrics slightly to fit your story!
Our favourite lyrics: “I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad/Carry you around when your arthritis is bad/All I wanna do is grow old with you”
5. Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On
One for those with a sense of humour (and soul)! The perfect way to avoid slow-dancing if it’s not your thing – plus it’s bound to get everyone else up there dancing with you!
Our favourite lyrics: “There’s nothin’ wrong with me/Lovin’ you, baby love, love”
6. I’ll Cover You (Reprise) – Rent
This is a perfect choice for musical theatre lovers – beautiful lyrics, no jazz hands necessary (save those for later!).
Our favourite lyrics: “With a thousand sweet kisses, I’ll cover you/When you’re worn out and tired/With a thousand sweet kisses, I’ll cover you/When your heart has expired”
7. Dixie Chicks – Cowboy Take Me Away
Country music is an ideal genre if you want to do something different without losing the romance factor – your guests will love this sweet number from the Dixie Chicks.
Our favourite lyrics: “I wanna be the only one/For miles and miles/Except for maybe you/And your simple smile”
8. Fleetwood Mac – You Make Loving Fun
An F-Mac track is always a cool choice – though this one is probably one of the more unusual compared to the popular ‘Everywhere’, ‘Songbird’ and ‘As Long As You Follow’. A fun, upbeat number, but with meaningful lyrics all the same.
Our favourite lyrics: “Sweet wonderful you/You make me happy with the things you do/Oh, can it be so/This feeling follows me wherever I go”
9. Queen – You’re My Best Friend
Another upbeat choice that still packs a punch with beautiful lyrics. Plus, you can never go wrong with a bit of Queen!
Our favourite lyrics: “You’re my sunshine/And I want you to know/That my feelings are true/I really love you”
10. Bob Marley – Is This Love
Classic, but unexpected – everyone will be singing along!
Our favourite lyrics: “I want to love you, and treat you right/I want to love you, every day and every night”
11. Sia – Day Too Soon
Sia’s earlier songs are just as beautiful as her current chart-topping hits, but much lesser-known and more unique.
Our favourite lyrics: “Honey I will meet you/Darling I will keep you in my heart”
12. Beyoncé – Crazy In Love (acoustic)
Why not try an acoustic version of one of your favourite pop songs? We love this version of Crazy In Love.
Our favourite lyrics: “The way that you know what I thought I knew/It’s the beat my heart skips when I’m with you/But I still don’t understand/Just how your love can do what no one else can”
13.Sufjan Stevens – The Dress Looks Nice on You
Fans of The OC will recognise Sufjan Stevens’ distinctive tone, but this acoustic track is more suite to a first dance than the background to Newport teen dramas.
Our favourite lyrics: “I can see a lot of life in you, I can see a lot of bright in you, and I think the dress looks nice on you.”
