The Bruce effect
From sizzling red carpet gowns to princess-perfect wedding dresses (he already has the weddings of Queen Rania of Jordan and Lady Tamara Grosvenor in his celebrity wedding portfolio), there’s something about Bruce Oldfield’s ability to create powerful, statement ‘wow-gowns’ that leaves even the A-list in a whirl. Amidst the speculation that he will design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, we run through his star-style hits so far.
Diana, Princess of Wales snapped in a glittering red Bruce Oldfield evening dress, arriving at Claridges London, 1989.
The British actress and presenter did vintage Hollywood glamour like no other when she slipped into this curve-defying dress by Oldfield for Elton’s John’s Academy Awards party in 2010.
Queen Rania of Jordan
For her wedding to King Abdullah of Jordan, Oldfield designed a voluminous silk, embroidered dress for Queen Rania. Her neat, little pillbox hat and matching veil set the whole dress off spectacularly. Can we expect something just as romantic, fairytale and ‘wow’ for Kate?
Be inspired to dress your bridesmaids or maid-of-honour in something as delicate and neutral as flame-haired, Harry Potter starlet Evanna Lynch’s party dress. We love the glittery top and satin puffball skirt combo – the perfect outfit for dancing the night away!
Another wizardry success by Oldfield, who dresses Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling in this sultry, black outfit to great effect. The magic lies in the wide-buckle belt which cinches in the waist and the tailored cropped jacket – a great way to cover any problem areas.
Lady Tamara Grosvenor
When the Duke of Westminster’s daughter wore one of Oldfield’s gowns to marry Ed Van Custem at Cheshire Cathedral in 2004, she got the designer to create a medieval-inspired wedding dress, complete with thick-set collar and cuffs; proof indeed of the designer’s versatility! The Queen and the groom’s friends, Princes’ William and Harry were also in attendance – perhaps Wills will have some input into THAT dress after-all…
Helen Mirren looks elegant and regal – she’s descended from Russian nobility don’t you know – in this Bruce Oldfield black floor-length gown, worn to the premiere of Red in 2010. The dramatic, red sash softens the stark black of the dress and nods to Helen’s theatrical side too. Encore!
When Jemima married Imran Khan at Richmond Registry Office in 1995 she opted for an understated Bruce Oldfield wedding suit, which suited her understated civil wedding perfectly. Like Jemima, pair a wide-brim hat with your own simple outfit, for knock-out fuss-free bridal styling.
