Who said wedding party speeches have to be exclusive to the best man and father of the bride?
Some people prefer to stick to tradition. But when you’re planning your celebration, don’t automatically assume that it’s only the male members of your bridal party who will be speaking up. There’s no reason that bridesmaids, maids of honour and mothers can’t give speeches as well as – or instead of – the best man, father and groom. And we always think a bride’s speech goes down well. All you have to bear in mind is that delightful as you will find the speeches, they probably won’t be the most interesting part of the day for your guests, so keep this section of the day to a reasonable length and don’t let too may people take the mic.
In case you or your maids need any convincing of how amazing it can be when one or more of the bride squad does a speech, we’re taking it back to 2016, when Taylor Swift was maid of honour at the wedding of her friend Britany Maack – now Britany LaManna – to now-husband Benjamin. Unsurprisingly, as a performer, Taylor she nailed her speech! You might want to send this speech to your own maid of honour as inspiration…

Taking to the stage during the wedding breakfast, she shared some heartfelt words with the guests. Taylor and Britany have been best friends since childhood, so the Lover singer had plenty of material – including the inside track on how the couple got together.
“He would chase her and pursue her through middle school and junior high and high school, and their paths would diverge, and then come back together,” she said.
“It would be so magically unpredictable, but at the same time, so incredibly fated just like the best love stories are.”
Was this, by any chance, a reference to her hit Love Story?
As well as celebrating the couple’s relationship, Taylor also made sure to talk about the love between her and her childhood friend. “My favourite accomplishment of my entire life is that everything in my life has changed except for me and Britany,” she said. “She was my partner in crime at Brownies camp and she was my date to the Grammys.”
This goes to show that, just like a good best man’s speech, a maid of honour or bridesmaid’s speech should include some personal anecdotes, including references to shared history.
