South Lodge Hotel, West Sussex

Classic venue for couples looking for a countryside hotel wedding or reception in the Sussex Downs

Country house style

From the gravel-swoosh of its sweeping driveway to the roaring fire in its stone fireplace, South Lodge Hotel in its 93 acres of rolling grounds oozes memorable luxe from the first. With 89 bedrooms including deluxe and junior suites, and a functions wing that boasts 12 rooms available for ceremonies and celebrations, it’s worth a look if you want a very special country house wedding within easy access of London, Gatwick Airport and the South coast.

A dedicated functions wing means you can choose from a selection of 12 function suites. The largest seats 130 for a wedding breakfast, rising to 200 for an evening reception. Others are suitable for a sit-down meal for 60, 50 or even 30. The smallest would be perfect for an intimate celebration of 15, in a grand room with private facilities. Every function room has windows on at least two sides, meaning you can enjoy views of the rolling countryside grounds surrounding South Lodge as you celebrate your marriage.

Wedding packages

When you book South Lodge Hotel for your wedding, you are allocated one of the hotel’s three experienced wedding coordinators to help organise your big day. Your package includes a complimentary menu and wine tasting to help you decide on catering, plus advice and recommendations on suppliers, decorations and entertainment, a private room where you can breakfast with overnight guests the morning after the wedding, silver cake stand and knife, table linen, glassware, tableware and crockery, and a dedicated banqueting manager, toastmaster and waiting staff on your wedding day.

Wedding licence

South Lodge has a licence for inside ceremonies and, since 2011, outside ceremonies in its chic Champagne Pavilion. Your wedding ceremony takes place in a room separate from reception festivities. Couples can choose to marry on site or book the hotel for a reception after holding a ceremony elsewhere. Although the hotel has 12 function rooms, it limits wedding bookings so you will never be sharing your celebration day with another couple at the same time.

Built by a wealthy Victorian naturalist and collector in 1883, South Lodge has been sympathetically extended and refurbished to include a new accommodation wing, expanding capacity to 89 bedrooms. Guests can expect spacious rooms in both the original building and new wing, all individually styled to a high standard with wow-factor bathrooms; many also boast private verandahs or balconies, and one suite even has a private open-air hot tub overlooking the glories of the Sussex countryside. Bedrooms will definitely not disappoint. Wedding guests enjoy special bedroom rates.

Photo opportunities

Balconies overlooking the terrace that runs the length of the back of South Lodge are perfect for wedding photographers looking for a birdseye view of events. Rolling lawns, woodland and a series of lakes are also perfect for memorable shots of the big day. Inside the venue, bride and groom can pose against the historic stonework of archways from the original building, the baronial-style staircase in the functions wing or Italianate marble hallways throughout.
