THE VIBE: A picturesque country escape for city slickers, combining old-school tradition with thoroughly modern amenities… including a to-die-for Kallima Club and Spa.
BEST BRIDE-TO-BE TREATMENT: “Killer Body” and “No Botox Needed” are hard to pass on but my weary self had come craving a massage. Using sumptuous comfort zone products, I spent a heavenly 60 minutes in the hands of my therapist to enjoy the Comfort Touch Body Massage. A foot ritual was followed by some very intense massage moves. Focusing on my shoulders (as requested) I emerged feeling virtually knot-free and totally chilled out.
BEST AMENITY: The spa is both easy on the eye and pampering on the stressed-out soul. But the grounds will take your breath away. The gardens and quarter-mile ornamental lake were originally designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, one of the most sought after landscape gardeners of the 18th century (he was also responsible for Blenheim Palace). If you haven’t already booked your wedding venue, we challenge you not to start daydreaming about holding it here. Imagine the photographs! You can also wander through Syon House full of priceless antiques and artwork or take a short trip to Kew Gardens if you fancy going a little further afield.
MUST DOS WHILE YOU’RE THERE: How often will you get the opportunity to sample Marco Pierre White’s steak? Whether or not his recipes feature OXO cubes (ahem) just being there feels like a treat in itself. Although my vegetarian options on the menu were sparse, my other half devoured his mammoth-sized steak. However, we can both happily report that the wine menu was fantastic!
WHO GOES: City types looking for some out-of-the-city R&R. Lots of mother/daughter combos are in residence but also, definitely in the hotel and higher-than-average for a spa, are couples. We’re talking comfy bathing robes by day and oh-so-chic at night. Both the spa and the bar in the hotel ooze a relaxed atmosphere. Many of the guests seem so at home that the staff greet them like old friends. It’s hard not to jealously suppose that many of them are able to use this as their regular bolthole.
THE BEDROOM: The room itself was comfortable but what really made it special were the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private courtyard.
DETAILS: Hilton London Syon Park offers some fabulous excuses-to-escape-from-London with its overnight spa packages that would appeal to pre-and post-wedding brides. How do you like the sound of a Romantic Getaway, a Slice of Heaven, or a Stay n Spa? Go and be pampered – you deserve it. And even if you opt not to stay over, the Kallima Spa offers some indulgent day passes. How does the Afternoon Tea Spa with your bridesmaids sound? We’re talking a choice of treatments, use of the spa facilities and a bottle of bubbly to sip (along with pre-requisite finger sandwiches and cupcakes) while relaxing in the Jacuzzi. This sort of hen party we highly approve of!
WHAT’S INCLUDED: Every spa break – available for one or two nights – includes accommodation in a stunning Hilton room plus full use of the health club, pool and spa and a three-course dinner at the new Marco Pierre Steakhouse Bar & Grill – just to ensure the upmost jealousy back at home. Want champagne, chocolates and strawberries as a fixture within your package? No problem… that can be arranged. Prices start from £144.50 per person.
LOCATION: Close to London – but far enough away that it feels like you’re having a mini pre-moon, Hilton London Syon Park is perched on the edge of the Syon House estate (home to a very lucky Duke of Northumberland.) If you’re driving, you’re looking at 30 minutes from central London, 20 minutes from Heathrow or 60 minutes from Gatwick. The nearest tube is 22 minutes away (Richmond) or if you’re top-training, Syon Lane station is a stone’s throw. Did we mention that the hotel isn’t too far away from Kew Gardens, Richmond Park and even the Rugby Union stadium at Twickenham? If your fiancé is fond of strangely shaped ball games, you could always (generously) offer to wait for him in the spa…
