Your first point of call should be a baker or professional cake maker who will be able to give you a clear idea of exactly what size your dream wedding cake needs to be.

A lot depends on what your cake is made of – and whether you plan to serve it with coffee or as a dessert in its own right. As a general rule, expect a rich sponge cake to feed around twice as many at your wedding as a lighter sponge.

‘A one-tier 12″ cake will feed 55 wedding guests (or 35 as dessert). Two tiers, measuring 12″ and 8″, will feed 80 wedding guests (50 for dessert); and three tiers of 12″, 10″ and 8″ will serve 120 guests (90 for dessert,’ says Purita Hyam from chocolateweddingcakes.co.uk.
