Fancy beachside vows in Sri Lanka? (photo by Polly Alexandre)
Thanks to lower costs, guaranteed sunshine and a jump-start on the honeymoon, more couples are choosing destination weddings than ever before. As a result, a staggering 1.5 million of us will be hopping on flights to destinations near and far this year to ring those weddings bells (either as guests, bridesmaids or the happy couple), according to new research by UK travel trade association ABTA. So where in the world are the most popular spots to say ‘I do’?
Tropical long-haul destinations lead the pack, with Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Caribbean topping the popularity charts. The USA also draws big wedding traffic, in particular NYC, Las Vegas and Hawaii. Closer to home, couples flock to Italy, Greece and Cyprus, while Croatia, Mexico and the UAE have recently gained in popularity.
