Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress and hair: our first impressions

Princess Eugenie's wedding dress wasn't what we were expecting

Today saw Princess Eugenie marry Jack Brooksbank in a beautiful ceremony, attended by the royal family and a whole host of celebrity friends (read about their outfits here), but all we were really talking about was Eugenie’s sensational wedding dress, designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos.

The dress features a low back which shows off some of her scarring from an operation to correct her scoliosis as a child.

The open back was a specific request by Eugenie in tribute to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and she worked closely with Mr Pilotto and Mr De Vos on the design.

The dress includes personal touches from the couple, including a thistle for Scotland acknowledging the couple’s love of Balmoral, a shamrock for Ireland as a nod to the bride’s Ferguson family, and the York rose and ivy representing the couple’s home. Each of these symbols has been woven into a jacquard of silk, cotton and viscose blend.

“I think she looked stunning in the off the shoulder coat dress number, with a full skirt,” says YYW’s editor-at-large Peta Hunt. “It is such a huge occasion and she really needed a dress that filled the venue, but kept it simple at the same time.”

“I love the gentle low v-neck and think the whole gown worked really well with the huge train, in damask satin. It’s a perfect choice for her shape and colouring, plus it was nice to see her not wearing a veil too! Very unusual for a Royal.”

“I predict this will lead a trend for simple and less embellished dresses, plus off the shoulder and understated elegance,” continues Peta.

“I am sure that she will influence some brides to be, whether she will have the huge impact that both Kate and Meghan’s weddings had on the public is unlikely as she is not as well known, however she is a role model for some.”

Eugenie’s wedding tiara

Eugenie is wearing the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara, borrowed from the Queen. It is made of brilliant and rose cut diamonds set in platinum, with six emeralds on either side, and was given to the Queen in 1942.

Eugenie’s bridal bouquet

Her bouquet consists of Lily of the Valley, Stephanotis pips, baby blue thistles, white spray roses, sprigs of myrtle from Osbourne House and trailing ivy.

Eugenie’s wedding hair

“Princess Eugenie’s wedding hair is a beautiful twist on classic bridal hair,” says stylist Andrew Barton, creative director for the Headmasters salon group.

“It showed off her facial features beautifully, including her eyes and cheekbones. The soft tendrils either side of the face gave a casual and relaxed feel to the look.”

“It’s likely she is wearing some kind of temporary weft to help build the shape at the back and these are brilliant to add that extra volume needed.”

“She’s been growing her hair over the past few months in preparation for the big day and the gentle centre parting is perfect for brides as it takes the hair back, away from the face so you don’t need to worry about it getting in the way.”

“The style really hit all the marks for me, it suited her really well and although super modern was still very royal and classic, this look will stay on trend for a while.”
