14 insanely useful relationship lessons from Disney films

“People do crazy things… when they’re in love.”

1. You are your own hero
Whether it’s Rapunzel in Taken or Merida in Brave, you don’t need a knight in shining armour to save you, you can fight your own battles thank you very much.

2. You have to love yourself first
Much like Queen Elsa in Frozen, you can’t expect relationships to flourish if you don’t love yourself first. You need to embrace yourself, flaws and all.

3. Take things slowly
As lovely as it is to be swept off your feet by a dazzlingly handsome man, wait to know him a bit first before you walk down the aisle. In Kristoff’s words, “Hang on, you mean to tell me you GOT ENGAGED to someone you just met that day?!” – and we all know how that turned out…

4. This whole Prince Charming thing is overrated
See point above, there was nothing charming about Hans in Frozen, was there? Being realistic is key.

5. Beauty on the inside is what counts
It doesn’t matter how beautiful you are, if you’re as mean as Snow White’s Evil Queen there is no hope of finding true love. Also see The Princess and the Frog.

6. You might go a little crazy
As Meg puts it in Hercules, “People do crazy things… when they’re in love.” So no one will judge you for checking your phone every five minutes to see that important text.

7. Never lie
There’s no two ways about it, lying is never a good thing, and it almost always comes back to bite you in the a**e. So follow Fairy Flora’s sage advice and “arm thyself with this enchanted Shield of Virtue, and this mighty Sword of Truth, for these weapons of righteousness will triumph over evil.”

8. Don’t try to be someone you’re not
Similarly to the point above, don’t try and pretend you’re something you’re not. Jasmine was furious at Aladdin for hiding his true identity, while it could’ve all gone pear shaped for Cinderella too.

9. Follow your heart
Whether he/she is the one, or things just aren’t working out, you almost always know for sure. So be brave and “Listen with your heart, you will understand” as Grandmother Willow in Pocahontas would say.

10. Be patient
As cheesy as that sounds, love takes time. And if you haven’t found it yet, you need to be patient and trust that you will find someone when it’s the right time. As Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother would say, “Even miracles take a little time.”

11. Broaden your horizons
Don’t stick to just one type, or dismiss someone because their job isn’t good enough, or they don’t dress a certain way. Jasmine couldd’ve married royalty, but instead she chose Aladdin, a poor boy with a kind heart.

12. You have to give each other space
The Beast realised he had to set Belle free, even though he had no expectations of her returning his love. But by basically giving her space to breathe, he let her realise her own feelings for him and true love ensued.

13. Sometimes love doesn’t last forever
Yes, it’s not “and they lived happily ever after for everyone”. John Smith and Pocahontas loved each other, but it just wasn’t meant to be, they just wanted different things from life.

14. Don’t forget your friends
You don’t want to be that person who totally neglects their friends because they are loved up, because if it ends, they might not be there for you. Snow White didn’t forget the Seven Dwarves after she met Prince Charming, and they loved her for it.
