A study in elegance

Luxe details and a black, white and blush scheme took centre stage at Emma & Jon's black-tie do

Emma & Jon: The beginning

Emma didn’t know Jon, a fellow doctor at the hospital where she worked, but she knew one thing for certain when a mutual friend introduced them: “He was gorgeous!” she says. “The attraction was instant.” Eventually Jon, 32, plucked up the courage to ask Emma, 28, out and three years later he popped the question.

Emma & Jon: The Dress

34860

When it came to choosing The Dress, Emma surprised herself. “I thought I’d go for a plain, slinky dress but when I tried on the Pronovias gown (pronovias.com), with its lace detailing along the bodice and its ruffled skirt, I fell in love straight away.”

Emma & Jon: The Look

34861

To complete the classic look, she wore a lace veil from Lace Bridal (lacebridal.co.uk) and Swarovski jewellery, while Jon was dashing in a James Bond-style tuxedo from Hugo Boss (hugoboss.com).

Emma & Jon: The Shoes

Funky wellies aside, Emma wore a classic pair of Christian Louboutin (christianlouboutin.co.uk) shoes to up the W-day glam.

Emma & Jon: The Bouquet

Emma’s bouquet of pink Sweet Avalanche roses was decorated with a glitzy brooch for a Hollywood-style finish.

When Emma found her bridesmaid’s dresses, she also found her colour scheme. “We wanted a black tie event with an elegant feel,” she says. “Then when we found the vintage-looking bridesmaids’ dresses at Zara (zara.com), we realised pink blush worked too.”

Emma & Jon: The Venue

‘You are my best friend, love and inspiration,’ Emma and Jon’s personalised vows read at a civil ceremony in the Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa in Cheshire, on 19 June. “Saying our vows in front of everyone was lovely and really emotional,” says Emma.

Emma & Jon: The Tableplan

The couple got crafty, making the invitations and table plan from scratch in keeping with the theme. “We went for white, postcard-sized invites with our initials on the front wrapped in a black bow,” says Emma.

Emma & Jon: The Tables

Emma and Jon named tables after vineyards, inspired by a dream holiday to South Africa’s wine country.

Emma & Jon: The Flowers

34868

They worked shades of blush into the floral arrangements (theblackrose.co.uk), think sweet Avalanche Roses for the bouquet and white peonies tied with black ribbon for the maids. Candelabra and silver bowls with roses and hydrangeas created a stylish backdrop on the reception tables.

Emma & Jon: The Favours

34869

Emma combined favours with place names for the reception, having each guest’s name iced on top of a chocolate; heart shapes for the ladies and squares for the men.

Emma & Jon: The Cake

34870

Black sashes and ribbons were tied around the wedding cake (edesiacakedesigns.com) in keeping with the black-tie theme.

Emma & Jon: The Menu

34871

Delicious treats of vegetable pakoras, smoked salmon, chicken satay and dill scones were served as canapés.

Emma & Jon: The Memories

34872

A saxophonist played melodic blues at the drinks reception before the jazz band, Fonix (fonixmusic.co.uk), had guests up on their feet dancing until the early hours of the morning. Emma’s most memorable moment was dancing with Jon to a jazz version of Candi Station’s You Got The Love. “It was our chance to relax and enjoy the moment – just the two of us.”
