How to organise your wedding Down Under...

Your wedding in Australia

What style of wedding?

“Because of the great weather and beautiful scenery in Australia, outside weddings on beaches and in gardens are the most popular,” says Michelle Zanetti, of Australian Dream Weddings. “In Sydney, the Royal Botanic Gardens overlooking the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge are particularly popular.”

How long does it take to get there?

This is the annoying bit! It takes 19-20 hours London-Perth (west coast), usually with one stopover, or 22-26 hours to the east coast (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, etc), depending on stopovers.

What time of year is best?

“In Sydney, the spring and summer months (September-March) are very popular,” says Michelle. “Further north (Cairns and Port Douglas) as it gets warmer and more tropical, the best time is the dry season from May to November. But you can find a great location in Australia at any time of the year.”

Legal considerations?

At least one month and one day prior to the marriage, you need to give a completed Notice of Intended Marriage form to the celebrant who is conducting the ceremony. You will need your birth certificates (originals) and evidence that any divorce or death certificates relating to any previous marriages.

Anything else?

“Most brides bring their dress as hand luggage, so that is not a problem,” says Michelle. “I can’t really see any challenges. Australia is such a popular destination and once you are here, you can relax and enjoy your wedding and honeymoon at a fraction of what it would have cost to have a large wedding and reception at home. You can arrange a beautiful wedding in Australia for an average cost of A$3,500 (£1,700).”
