Weddings in Greece

Chill out with a relaxed Greek wedding

Your wedding in Greece

What style of wedding?

“Weddings are a lot more traditional in Greece,” says Lisa Burton, of The Bridal Consultant. “You get a lot of tavernas and a lot of people getting married on the beach or in private gardens. It is generally very, very relaxed and low-key. Couples tend to use lots of local flowers and cakes. Greece would suit anyone who is super-relaxed about getting married.” She says the island of Zakynthos (Zante) offers the quintessential Greek wedding – friendly local people, great beaches, crystal clear waters. “It’s perfect for families and people with lots of kids on their guestlist,” Lisa says. “Or there is Santorini, which offers a completely different Greek experience. It’s more expensive, and attracts a more boutique-style of wedding. It is not a beach island but it’s on a volcano, so there are lots of sunset weddings overlooking the water.”

How long does it take to get there?

4-5 hours from London.

What time of year is best?

The months from May to October are most popular, as these tie in with charter flight schedules to the islands. Outside these months, some resorts and other facilities shut down.

Legal considerations?

“You should allow four to five months to get all your paperwork in order before your big day,” says Lisa. “Greece tends to be a little more complicated than some other countries.” There is no residency requirement for Greece. The Foreign & Commonwealth office has a useful webpage here.

Anything else?

Your guests will love you for choosing Greece as your wedding destination. The country is as varied as its islands are widespread. From the historical delights of Athens to the beaches of the Ionian islands and charming harbours of Cephalonia, there really is something for everyone under the Greek sun.
