Michelle Williams wearing Louis Vuitton
The Oscars is always a veritable feast of eye candy for brides planning their glam W-day looks. And 2012’s awards were no different, as the stars took the idea of the red carpet to extremes in varying shades of scarlet, crimson, coral and raspberry.
We think Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams took the style crown in this stunning peplum-skirted Louis Vuitton number in a vibrant shade of coral. The little bow belt and fashion-forward peplum push the trend buttons, while the ruched bust and train keep the ensemble looking timeless.
But it wasn’t just Michelle who was painting the town red: read on to see which stars also took the crimson route and which rang the changes with steely blues and metallics…

Natalie Portman wearing vintage Dior
Red-carpet regular and last year’s Best Actress Natalie Portman stepped away from her usual Rodarte floaty style and went for this vintage 1954 Dior haute couture ballgown. We love the polka-dots (a total style steal for your maids), the chic black clutch, the contrasting wine-coloured nails, the rich-girl diamonds, the Old Hollywood hair… everything!
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wearing Antonio Berardi
Looking sleek as always, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in this stylish Antonio Berardi dress. Bright scarlet with waist-cinching detail and lace embellishment, it’s a very wearable style for modern maids. Complement the gown with slicked-back hair and simple drop earrings.
Claire Danes wearing Valentino
Claire Danes totally rocked several of this year’s hottest bridal trends – illusion neckline, sweetheart bust, ruffled skirt – with this fiery Valentino creation. A sprinkling of Tiffany & Co. diamonds were a glam finishing touch. We love how the relaxed California-girl hair and make-up keeps it fresh and not too formal.
Emma Stone wearing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture
Fashion fave Emma Stone, who’s film The Help was nominated for Best Picture, looked chic and fresh in this Giambattista Valli confection. With its directional neck bow, it needed simple hair and accessories, and Emma obliged with her sleek updo and creamy lip colour, while jazzing up the look with a blinging clutch and bracelet.
Livia Firth wearing Valentino
Colin Firth’s wife Livia continued her ‘Green Carpet Challenge’ with this eco-friendly Valentino gown. Made of silk blended with recycled PET plastics, the full skirt and sheer sleeves still had a glam edge. A slick of red lippy was the perfect finishing touch (and Mr Darcy on your arm, of course!).
Penelope Cruz wearing Giorgio Armani
Does La Cruz ever put a fashion foot wrong? She looked breathtaking as always in this floaty organza off-the-shoulder Armani gown, with more than a hint of Grace Kelly about it. Waved vintage Hollywood hair, tons of diamonds and a box clutch completed the vision of screen loveliness. Why not look for Fifties-style off-the-shoulder gowns to show off your bridesmaids’ shoulders like Penélope?
Katie Holmes wearing Elie Saab
How stylish is this midnight-blue gown from bridal fave designer Elie Saab? Katie Holmes pulls it off with aplomb, complementing the softly-layered skirt and embellished bust with a modern half-up, half-down do with a full fringe. Extra style points for matching her gown to hubby Tom Cruise’s tie, too.
Jessica Chastain wearing Alexander McQueen
Bombshell alert! All-out-glam maids could do worse than follow Jessica Chastain’s winning formula: strapless, figure-flattering McQueen dress, porcelain skin and flowing wavy locks. We love the golden detail on this dress, which adds the perfect amount of interest.
Busy Philipps wearing Dolce & Gabbana
Cougar Town actress and Michelle Williams’ BFF Busy Philipps looked fab in this sweetheart-neckline gown. Soft lace draping emphasises her waist while the steely colour is perfectly set-off by the bright earrings and shoes combo.
