Maids to Measure owners (and sisters) India and Sinclair
Gowns in all colours of the rainbow, bottles of fizz, cake pops and walls speckled with modern art – this London bridesmaids boutique is one cool set-up.
Spotting a gap in the market following their numerous experiences as bridesmaids, sisters India and Sinclair wanted to create a service where brides could easily find the dresses they wanted, in colours they chose, in styles that fit. Putting their heads together, they dreamed up Maids to Measure, allowing girls to create their ideal gowns in pleasant surroundings, while enjoying girlie time with their maids.
And despite launching just two years ago, they’ve already swept up the You & Your Wedding 2014 Award for best Bridesmaids Retailer. Here’s what they had to share about dressing brides’ best girls:
What made you want to work in bridal and how did you start out?
India had already had a taste of the wedding industry and was continually being asked for bridesmaid dress recommendations but could never think of anything other than high street options. I was then a bridesmaid three times one year and what should have been a fun and memorable occasion was stressful and uninspiring. We therefore put our heads together and came up with Maids to Measure, built out of our own personal frustrations and realising there was a gap in the market for a British bridesmaid brand that allowed girls to create personal and unique dresses but have fun while doing so!
What advice would you give a newly engaged bride who has no idea where to start?
Come and visit us! Our studio is like a massive dressing-up box, giving girls lots of samples to try to start getting an idea of styles, shapes, colours and fabrics. If nothing else it’s an excuse to get the girls together and have some fun.
We are just about to launch our Maid Overs with Perfect 10 Beauty to allow girls to make the most of their appointments and have beauty treatments before, after or during their appointment!
What’s the funniest thing a bride has ever said/done in your studio?
We had a fun group of girls down from Liverpool, who came to us as at the start of their hen weekend, after a few bottles of champagne. I’m not sure they made it much further!
Which dress/style is your bestseller, and why do you think that is?
Our new chiffon Multi Maid is currently our bestseller, however our new Vintage Maid range has only just launched and is becoming very popular.
Chiffon has become our trademark fabric and lets girls have a floaty-style dress but is still extremely flattering. Navy is still our most popular colour and is just a classic shade everyone loves.
What are your top tips for 2014?
Don’t just think of bridesmaids in the same colour in different styles, think of shading. For example, we currently have eight shades of pink! We’ve also linked up with Ciaté London to launch eight new exciting on-trend colours for this summer that I think our brides are going to love.
Who should a bride take with her to the boutique and why?
All her bridesmaids for a fun-filled day of champagne, cupcakes and trying on!
Where do you keep your award?
We’ve had a new shelf built for it and it now has pride of place in our London studio.
