Y&YW hits the shops: twobirds Bridesmaid

Because we can't walk past a bridal boutique without dropping in!

Dresses in a rainbow of colours that can be tied into a style that’s guaranteed to suit each and every one of your girls? It can happen! Founded on the idea that being a bridesmaid doesnʼt have to mean forgoing comfort or style, twobirds Bridesmaid dresses are made from a luxurious jersey fabric and are available in three lengths so you and your girls will be spoilt for choice. And did we mention they have been worn by pop princesses Lady Gaga and The Saturdays’ Mollie King for their friends’ weddings?

The beautiful boutique near Covent Garden has two relaxing, airy studios that can comfortably fit your bridal posse, and the invaluable expert advice from the lovely twobirds team makes it one boutique you can’t afford to miss.

We popped in to see Anna Weiss, twobirds Bridesmaid’s Sales and Operations Manager – here’s what she had to share about dressing your best girls:

What made you want to work in bridal and how did you start out?

My background was in fashion but in 2008, one of the brands I worked on launched a capsule bridal range, which opened the doors to wedding world. After exhibiting at Harrogate and visiting various bridal retailers, I knew it was where I wanted to work – so much friendlier than fashion! As soon as I saw the twobirds dresses and met the UK Director Michelle, I knew I had to be involved with the brand.

What advice would you give a newly-engaged bride who has no idea where to start?

Start with magazines and blogs to get an idea of what styles and ideas you might like for your wedding and from there you’ll quickly become familiar with what boutiques, designers and suppliers are suited to your taste and budget.

Scrapbooks are always fun too, I love it when girls bring theirs with them as it gives such an insight into their dream day and allows us to help with colours and themes. And let the experts guide you, we are here to help and make the experience as fun and stress free as possible.

What do you most enjoy about having brides and their bridesmaids visit your showroom?

We love how excited girls are when they come in to try our dresses! It’s such a fun day out for brides and their bridesmaids and as our dresses are a real crowd-pleaser, enthusiasm levels can go through the roof! Every group that comes in gets our whole appointment space to themselves so they can really relax and enjoy a fun and personal experience. Gill, our lovely Saturday girl also loves the problem solving element to appointments. Because our dresses are so adaptable we can deal with any issues girls may have. We all have our bits we want to show off and others we don’t and our different tying styles allow you to do this.

Which dress/style is your bestseller, and why do you think that is?

All our dresses can be tied to create all our different styles but our ballgown length (floor length) is consistently our most popular – it’s just so elegant, hides a multitude of imperfections and can be worn either as a formal dress or a maxi dress after the wedding, depending on what you team with it.

Colour-wise, Heather, which has only been available since November has been an absolute winner – it suits everyone, is the perfect balance of a neutral colour with a bit of depth and warmth and also ties in with so many popular colour schemes.

What are your top tips for 2014?

This year it’s all about mixing colours – we have seen so many stunning combinations and it’s great to see girls being adventurous. There have been bold mixes of jewel colours and also softer palettes, which are more tonal. They all work incredibly well. We’ve created lots of mood boards on our Pinterest and Facebook pages to inspire brides.

Who should a bride take with her to the boutique and why?

If possible, bring all of your bridesmaids with you to the appointment so they can be involved in the fun that is trying all our different styles and being shown our tying techniques. However, we realise that’s often easier said than done. The great news is, because our dresses require no alterations, and come in just two sizes which cover a UK4 – 24, if someone isn’t able to make the appointment you can still rest assured that the dress will fit and they will feel fabulous. And our online video tutorials mean learning how to tie the dresses couldn’t be easier.

What’s your USP?

Ultimate versatility! Our dress really does suit everyone because of all the different tying options and because of the luxurious jersey we use and the fact we use so much, it drapes and flatters all body shapes. We’ve had girls cry with happiness after spending days trying on dresses which haven’t worked on everyone. It’s so nice to see a group of bridesmaids all looking and feeling amazing!
