8 top style tips for mothers-of-the-bride

Make sure mum looks her best with these on-trend occasionwear tips from Regine Ellis, creative director at John Charles

1. Pastel perfection

“Pretty pastels are going to be big news for S/S 13. Lilac is top of the list, especially for John Charles, and we’ve worked it into a number of our latest styles, such as a beautiful laser-cut dress available with a range of different jacket styles. Soft metallic silver is also key which is great news as it’s an easy-to-wear transitional colour that effortlessly takes you from day to evening.”

2. Opposites attract

“For MOB’s who want to make a bold fashion statement, pairing contrasting colours like rich navy and crisp ivory is making a chic comeback next season and there’s going to be a wide range of vivid abstract designs if you like prints.”

3. Back to the Sixties

“This season’s cuts remain slim-fitting, a naturally feminine figure inspired by the classic British tailoring of the Sixties. It was a revolutionary time in women’s fashion and I searched through hundreds of photos of Sixties glitterati to get some inspiration. Hints of this can be seen in the Jackie O-esque classic jackets with rounded collars and slim-fitted skirts that we have created this season.”

4. Lovely in lace

“A perfect upcoming trend for any mother-of-the-bride to try is lace. Modern ways of wearing it, such as overlaid on dresses or to add delicate details to cropped jackets, help shrug off its sometimes stuffy image and add a touch of femininity to any outfit.”

5. To top if off

The perfect headpiece will always be essential MOB wear and this season is no exception with co-ordination being key. With this in mind, John Charles has once again collaborated with milliner Vivien Sheriff to create a matching hat or fascinator for each style in our collection to make perfect pairings easy.”

6. Finishing touch

“But when it comes to accessories, I would suggest you steer clear of matching all your colours and keep bags and footwear understated. Go for nude or pale metallic shoes with a tonal clutch and let your dress speak for itself!”

7. Get inspired

“Take contemporary style inspiration from the well-dressed Middleton ladies. Carole Middleton, just like her daughters, has carved out a very clean and individual sense of style for herself and she always exudes classic sophistication.”

8. Perfect fit

“Comfort is key for the big day. Make sure you are completely happy with your outfit and discuss how it feels with the retailer as they will be able to offer you tailoring advice to ensure the perfect fit.”
