Designer Kate Halfpenny’s dress and tell

Designer of the dress on the cover of our new issue, Kate Halfpenny reveals all

We’re very proud to give a nod of approval to the gorgeous wedding dress on the cover of our Jan/Feb issue of You & Your Wedding. The magical frock was designed by renowned stylist Kate Halfpenny, and she’s very happy to share the secret behind her masterpiece.

Kate, what was your inspiration for the dress on the cover of You & Your Wedding?

I was very much inspired by luxury fabrics with texture for the cover for this issue. In our new collection we have this fab mohair tie-back cardi and the big frill organza skirt.

The cover shows off the back of the gown – is that your favourite part of it?

My favourite part of lots of my dresses is the detail on the back. What could have been a simple jumper we made into an interesting open-back top with a duchess bow tie.

Why do you think the dress is a good fit for You & Your Wedding?

I think it shows that you can wear alternative fabrics and textures other than satins and lace. And it’s got a nice fashiony twist.

What’s your dream wedding dress?

My dream wedding dress was the one my assistant Cherry and I created for my wedding last year. It was an off-the-shoulder draped corset in duchess satin with a huge circle skirt that folded into waves of satin. It was shorter at the front and then ran into a long train at the back. I felt incredible.

What are the perfect accessories for a wedding day?

I’m a big fan of veils. When else are you ever going to have the opportunity to wear one? I think they can really complete the look – from a full-length lace edged veil to a birdcage veil teamed with a diamanté hair slide.

What are your top tips for a bride-to-be choosing her wedding dress?

My strongest advice is, try dresses that aren’t necessarily styles you would normally wear – they might surprise you. And secondly, don’t make decisions on a dress based on a sneaky camera phone snap. Revisit the dresses you loved and make your decision based on how it makes you feel when you try it on again.

You’ve worked with Kate Moss, Cheryl Cole and Rihanna – are you nervous showcasing designs for such big personalities?

These are all incredible women and I work closely with them when designing clothes for them so I know they will look fabulous and feel amazing. It’s an honour to design dresses for women in general. So much trust and I feel very privileged.

Congratulations on your styling of the amazing M&S Christmas advert, that must have been a fun project?

It was and I’m very proud to work with such a heritage British brand and amazing stars. We had such a brilliant time in the fantasy world of all the magic and sparkle. There are some amazing clothes this season so it was fun creating a character with them for the ad.

Do you think Christmas and weddings go together?

I love a Christmas wedding. I’m working with a friend on her dress for her Christmas wedding and I think it’s such a perfect time to get married. So romantic and everyone is feeling festive and happy. Plus, I love all the cover ups you can wear over your dress – from the woolly ones to the vintage furs, marabou feathers to a gorgeous velvet or fringed jacket.
